Bellenden Residents' Group (BRG) - Tube in South East London

There are very few Tube lines in South East London; see this real map of where they are: http://www.jstott.me.uk/googlemaps/tubemap. So SE London hardly features on the Tube map which most people carry around in their heads. It is therefore much more difficult to work out how to travel around in SE London and especially how to connect with the other rail transport systems. In fact there are good ways of doing this but because the marketing of the links is so poor they are not easily understood. Some of the Overground rail services in SE London are, to the user, almost part of the same system as the Tube, where they interconnect very well like at London Bridge, Blackfriars & Victoria. This News section includes news posts which relate to getting transport strategy to address the need for better integration of the Tube and Overground services in SE London, or the extension of the Tube itself into SE London, or of the publicity for them in better maps.

Update on Bakerloo Line extension

Extract from Southwark Public Transport Consultative Forum minutes
5th December 2012 at 160 Tooley Street:
...The council has been working with TfL and Lewisham Council in order to try to move this currently unfunded scheme forward. We see an opportunity to deliver the extension when the existing line is modernised after 2020. Feasibility work carried out by TfL suggests that an alignment via Camberwell, Peckham and going on to Lewisham and Bromley (Hayes) has a positive business case. An alternative alignment through Southwark via the Old Kent Road has also been considered. Further work to build the case for the extension is required and we have requested that TfL authorise this work to proceed. The possibility of re-opening Camberwell station was raised. SP stated that this has been looked into previously – there are issues with the track layout and the proximity of Loughborough Junction station...

On 9th December the new London Overground arrives, and the day before the South London Line ends. Below is the latest news on these big changes in our local rail services, and some of the implications. We understand that the rail companies will be publicising the details two weeks before the changes. TfL will email all Oyster card holders who have supplied their email addresses. In the meantime keep watch on TfL website: http://goo.gl/9roun

Local action needed to extend Bakerloo line

Discussion on blog of ways to get the extension to happen. December 27th, 2011 by James Barber Liberal Democrat Councillor for East Dulwich
The Bakerloo line is the only tube line considered to still have spare capacity. So it could be extended. It already extends significantly to the north so a southern extension deeper into Southwark is the obvious direction and South London has very poor public transport.

Extending the Bakerloo: on the wishlist only

From London Reconnections White Knights and Wishlists: Northern and Bakerloo Line Extensions 23 January, 2012 by John Bull link to full article

It has become a much publicised fact that the Bakerloo Line is the only one of London’s Tubes that currently has spare capacity. Given this, it is perhaps no surprise that there has been much talk of its extension.
TfL have confirmed that, as it stands, the best business case would see an extension to Hayes, with one of two routes likely (and almost certainly not Lewisham’s suggested scheme):
1) Hayes via Old Kent and Lewisham
2) Hayes via Peckham and Camberwell Green
TfL Planning Director Michelle Mix, speaking in front of the London Assembly Transport Committee last week, admitted that of these the first option had a far stronger business case due to the inclusion of New Cross.
Despite a strong business case and spare capacity, though, it is financing that once again means that a Bakerloo extension is currently a non-starter.

Bakerloo Line extension in TfL “list of future schemes”

London SE1 Community Website 17 January 2012 A senior Transport for London official has told a City Hall committee that plans to extend the Bakerloo line south of Elephant & Castle are "not high up the priority list" despite the idea being mentioned in the Mayor's official transport strategy.

They have also indicated that this is not likely before 2020. But it can take many years to plan major new rail projects so planning needs to continue now. The RUS says:
