Changes to shelter and facilities on Peckham Rye platforms

Southern Rail have announced that work is about to start at Peckham Rye station to remove the existing shelters on Platforms 1 & 2 to replace them with a different kind. This is to make room for more passengers after the East London Line arrives on 9 December 2012.

This email is to give you some information about Southern Rail's proposals to improve the passenger waiting facilities on all four station platforms, and to encourage users to send comments to Southern. The draft plans were displayed at the event they held with us in the ticket hall in June. That was a very lively occasion when there were non stop conversations about the platform proposals and also about the work of Peckham Vision and the Peckham Society on the restoration of the historic parts of the station and how that fits with the vision for transforming that part of Peckham town centre.

Southern Rail have developed an action plan to improve some aspects of travelling to and from some of their stations. Peckham Rye is one of the stations, and the Travel Plan is attached. If you use Peckham Rye station and have any views on this, email SRUG. If anyone is keen to volunteer to monitor how well Southern keep to this plan, please let SRUG know.

One of the wonderful things about living in Peckham is that Peckham Rye station is like a Tube station. It is one of the most under-utilised assets in marketing Peckham, as a place to live, to ork and to visit.

It has enough direct trains to central London Tube stations to be like a turn up and go station to the central Tube network. Every 5 to 10 minutes a train arrives that can take the user within 9 to 15 minutes to one of 4 central London stations connecting with six different Tube Lines - Victoria, District, Circle, Bakerloo, Jubilee, Northern (both loops).

Southern Rail have in the last few months started some repair and improvement works, and the station has at last been included in the Government's NSIP (National Station Improvement Work) for more substantial improvements. We have managed to make contact with the rail company managers of the programme to try to influence the quality of the work so it enhances its historic architecture rather than ruins it, and to create the beginning of a channel to the decision makers for users' views on what changes are needed for station users.
